Meet the Rwandan innovator turning avocado losses into opportunities for farmers and youth
Euphrosine Mugeni Niyidukunda is, founder and MD of an agro-processing startup based in Huye District, Rwanda. Every year, smallholder farmers in her region lose tons of avocados due to insufficient markets and a lack of storage.
She established a factory that transforms fresh avocados into premium avocado oil for cooking and cosmetics to solve the avocado post-harvest losses.
Avocare Ltd is a women-led company founded in 2018 by Niyidukunda Mugeni Euprosine. Her parents were both farmers, and she grew up on their smallholder avocado farm in Mbazi, Huye District, southern province of Rwanda. Even though avocados were harvested in large quantities, farmers made very little money, and much of the produce ended up rotting or being fed to pigs. While studying at the University of Rwanda’s College of Business and Economics, she created her first avocado oil, Green Diamo, and won a youth innovation competition.
Currently, she produces a variety of products including: GD Extra Virgin Avocado Oil, used mainly for salads,GD refined avocado oil is used for cooking and frying
Her solution also improves farmer incomes and creates local jobs, especially for women and youth. Since launching, they’ve built strong supply partnerships and are ready to scale production to meet growing demand. they’re now seeking support to expand their capacity and bring Green Diamo Rwandan avocado oil to regional and international markets.
