MahwiYacu brings quality potato seeds and supports community growth in northern Rwanda

MahwiYacu Ltd is a company founded by Isaac Niyonizeye in Rugarama Sector, Burera District, with operations that have now expanded to the Gicumbi and Musanze districts. The company specializes in producing high-quality seed Irish potatoes and beans.

By 2019-2020, they had the idea to start producing their own potato seed product, termed minituber. This minituber has unique features of never being planted in soil, which guarantees a healthy and high-yielding crop. Even after the interruption caused during the COVID-19 pandemic, Mahwiyacu Ltd had to restart activities in 2022 and has since received the RDB certification as well as an official authorization for seed production.

Mahwiyacu Ltd partners with cooperatives and companies, employing agronomists who monitor seed production from greenhouses to farmers’ fields. Currently, the company provides jobs for 6 permanent staff and about 40 casual workers, creating jobs for youth and elevating the standards of living in the community. “My office is the farm. All my income comes from agriculture, and I don’t let discouragement stop me. This is what I studied, what I love, and what I am committed to continue doing”. Isaac Niyonizeye, the founder of MahwiYacu Ltd.

The goal of MahwiYacu is to establish its own greenhouses within the next two years and develop an agricultural laboratory within five years. In September 2025, the company launched a nursery school called Obet Bright Academy as part of expanding its community services.
