Vermifarm Ltd turns waste into affordable organic fertilizer

Vincent Sindukubwabo is the founder of VERMIFARM Ltd in Nyamata, Bugesera District, is transforming waste management and farming by producing vermicompost organic fertilizer made using earthworms. After studying plant science and environmental management at the University of Rwanda(A0) and Antwerp University in Belgium (Master's degree). Vincent explained that he came to identify a problem affecting small farmers, which is the lack of fertilizer, and that was where he started using the knowledge he had gained in school to establish the company VERMIFARM Ltd. He said, "I was looking at the problem of smallholder farmers lacking affordable fertilizer due to its high cost, and the land having lost its fertility. This led me to seek a solution that provides affordable and sustainable fertilizer."
VermiFarm Ltd collects food waste and manure, processes them with earthworms, and produces nutrient-rich compost within a six- to eight-week timeframe. This fertilizer boosts crop yields by 30-40% improves soil health, and is sold at only Rwf 300-400 per Kilo, making it accessible to smallholder farmers.
The company cooperates with cooperatives and schools in promoting its works through social media. They also attend the National Agriculture Show of Rwanda to showcase their innovations. VermiFarm has an ambitious vision of establishing new production sites throughout Rwanda while expanding to Burundi and Uganda.
Sindikubwabo advises youth to start small and exploit available resources, saying: "Organic fertilizer has a constant market; it is a business with a future."
Apart from being his source of livelihood, Sindikubwabo has created jobs for the youth and women, addressed the issue of expensive fertilizers for farmers, and protects the environment and all ecosystems that are beneficial to Rwandans.
