From Youth Connekt to Farming: Vincent Nzayisenga’s Journey in Agriculture

Vincent Nzayisenga, a 23-year-old from Mukingo sector, Nyanza District, is a clear example of how youth forums and training have resulted in real-world, viable projects. As a trained agronomist from ES Kinazi who is also a member of Duhuzimbaraga Nyamigogo Cooperative, he did not want to be dependent on an income from his job alone. After attending the Youth Connekt forum at Kigali Convention Centre (KCC) on November 24th/25th, 2025, he had an inspiration for starting his own project.

Through networking with other youth during YouthConnect, Vincent was motivated by several opportunities that he had found for him. As a result of this newfound motivation, he made an RWF 500,000 investment on January 16th to commence a combined poultry and fruit farming project (including guava and other fruits).

To date, he is raising 50 layers and 100 broilers. Although his original intention was to only cultivate fruits, there was a significant amount of quality manure produced by the layers that he was able to apply to his guavas and other fruit trees.

According to Vincent, his responsibilities as a cooperative agronomist are compatible with these methods. “Because of their scope of work being manageable, I can do this work by also being a full-time worker. The quick and abundant produce from poultry, as well as the manure they produce, produce results quickly and can contribute to increasing my output of fruit crops," explains Vincent.

This challenging entrepreneur illustrates how an agricultural education can be translated into practical applications that provide income to benefit both themselves and their community.

Vincent encourages young Rwandans; particularly those who are employed, to go beyond relying only on a salary. "My advice to my fellows, especially those already in the labour force, is to put your hands in the dirt and get involved in something; as His Excellency, President Paul Kagame says; the only way to achieve great success is through hard work. I recommend that young people, particularly people that work, do not limit themselves to the salaries they receive, but search for other income producing activities,” according to Vincent.

Vincent Nzayisenga's initiative, knowledge and commitment demonstrates how young Rwandans may take a lead role in transforming agriculture and animal husbandry in Rwanda through leveraging small opportunities into successful projects.
