RYAF INDUCTION WORKSHOP: Unlocking Youth Employment Opportunities through Agri-food Systems in the Eastern Province of Rwanda

June 7, 2024, The Rwanda Youth in Agribusiness Forum (RYAF) successfully hosted an induction workshop for the project team responsible for the implementation of the "Unlocking Youth Employment Opportunities through Agri-food Systems in the Eastern Province of Rwanda" project. This strategic workshop was held to ensure that every member of the project team, including the Project Manager, Finance Team, Communication Personnel, M&E Officer, and YORE Agents, comprehends their specific roles and responsibilities. It also aimed to foster a cohesive understanding of the collaboration with other consortia members, namely Empower Rwanda, Akazi Kanoze Access (AKA), Abusol Ltd, YEAN Ltd, and Africa Development Consultancy (ADC).

The workshop focused on aligning RYAF’s values, mission, and vision with the project's objectives. It also highlighted RYAF’s social safeguarding principles designed to protect the well-being of children and vulnerable older people who might be affected by the interventions at the grassroots level.

Keynote Speech

In his keynote address, RYAF CEO Rwiririza Jean Marie Vianney expressed profound gratitude to the Mastercard Foundation and the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) for their generous financial support. He emphasized the significant positive impact this funding will have created the dignified and fulfilling employment opportunities for young people in Rwanda's Eastern Province, with a particular focus on women.

Project Overview

RYAF has entered a framework agreement with AGRA to implement the "Unlocking Youth Employment Opportunities through Agri-food Systems in the Eastern Province of Rwanda" project. This three-year initiative (2024-2027) will be executed across seven districts: Nyagatare, Gatsibo, Kayonza, Rwamagana, Bugesera, Ngoma, and Kirehe. The project aims to create 34,038 dignified and fulfilling employment opportunities by 2027 through capacity strengthening and linking youth to sustainable job pathways in agriculture. The primary target group is young people aged 16 to 35, with a focus on ensuring that 70% of the beneficiaries are female.

RYAF's Role

RYAF will play a crucial role in mobilizing the youth and ensuring that 300,000 young people (70% of whom are women) are registered, connected, and engaged with the program. Additionally, RYAF will advocate for youth-related challenges, including access to land for agro-production and inclusion. The organization will also play a pivotal role in the project's learning route and knowledge dissemination efforts.

The Road Ahead

The induction workshop was a pivotal step towards the successful implementation of the project, setting a solid foundation for the project team to work synergistically towards unlocking vast employment opportunities for the youth in Rwanda's Eastern Province. The emphasis on social safeguarding ensures that the project not only provides employment but also fosters a safe and inclusive environment for all participants.
